9/11 THE WAY I REMEMBER IT....AND WILL NEVER FORGET.

I posted this entry on my blog for the last few years to commemorate 9/11 and it always receives a very positive response. So, I've made the decision to post this blog entry every year on 9/11, so new readers and new friends can read what I went through on this horrific day. Here is "9/11 The Way I remember it":

In my 10 years of writing this blog, I try to be entertaining and for the most part, funny. Today is not one of those days. In the years prior, I realized that I never shared my 9/11 experience with you in this blog because quite frankly, who wants to re-live that day of horror for New York City and this great nation? Today, I want to share with you, how my day went 20 years ago, which by the way, I cannot believe it's been 20 years already!

Anyway, I remember driving into Z100 in Jersey City, NJ the morning of 9/11/01. The sun was just rising and was looking like it was going to be a gorgeous day out. I remember it like it was yesterday. The air was crisp. Not too hot and not too cold. It was perfect! For some reason, I remembered driving down the New Jersey Turnpike from my Bergen County home and just looking at that beautiful skyline. Little did I know, it would be the last time that I would be enjoying that skyline with the twin towers standing tall.

Our morning was your typical morning of comedic banter among the morning show, which consisted of host Elvis Duran, Christine Nagy, John Bell, Danielle Monaro, Skeery Jones, David Brody, Greg T., Scotty B., a guy named Stick, myself, and our morning show consultant Dennis Clark. I happened to be screening phone calls for the show that day and right before 9 a.m., I received a strange one from a caller saying, "A plane just crashed into the World Trade Center. I'm not sure if it was one of those little Cessna planes, but the North Tower is on fire." I swear to God, those were his exact words. It's weird how some things just stay with you. Now, mind you, the only thing separating where our studios were in Jersey City and the World Trade Center was the Hudson River. We were up on the 36th floor and were literally that close. Also, at the time, the sun was still making its rise, so we brought the blinds behind us down so that we can see our computer screens. So, after I received this call, I turned my chair around and raised the blinds to see one of the most horrific sites I have ever seen in my life. It was clear that this plane that crashed into the North Tower was not a little Cessna because a little Cessna would not have caused damage like that to these strong towers.

As Elvis tells this same story in his 2019 book, Where Do I Begin, I quickly ran into the studio and told Elvis, who was in a commercial break, about the call and what I saw. The whole show literally ran out to take a look outside our window. Elvis made Christine and I stay in the studio to break the news. He interrupted commercials and asked me to go on the air to explain what had happened and what I saw, while Christine explained what she was reading on the news sources. As I ran back to the call screen area, the hotline rang and it was MJ, one of our promotions girls, and she explained to us that it was a commercial airliner that crashed into the tower. Elvis put her on the air and let her explain. People from different departments in our office showed up to watch from the window, when Stick noticed something flying really low over Staten Island, which was to our right. We literally watched this plane quickly pick up speed and as if it happened in slow motion, it slammed into the South Tower with such an impact, we felt our building shake. We all could not believe what we just saw. A plane used as a weapon as it slammed into the World Trade Center, I just remember seeing a fireball and paper shooting out the other end. I was baffled and confused and it all became clear when I heard Danielle Monaro crying, "Oh my God! We're being attacked by terrorists!"

We were forced to evacuate the building and at the time, all I could think about was trying to get home to my family because if there were any more attacks, I wanted to be with them. Elvis and John Bell stayed up in the control booth like true radio men to stay on the air. To this day, I truly commend them for their bravery and loyalty to our listeners. Elvis told us all to go home and be with our loved ones. He and John ended up staying on the air for the majority of the day taking phone calls from listeners as Dennis Clark helped screen the phone calls. Me? I high-tailed it out of there and at the time there was no cell signal. I could not call home. Driving through the streets of Jersey City that day was an absolute mess! People walking the streets like zombies with a "what the hell just happened" look on their face. I remember sitting in traffic and looking in my side view mirror only to see the South Tower collapse. I literally almost threw up when I saw this. I couldn't believe it. I asked the guy in the car next to me, "Did that tower just go down?" He said it did and we sat there stunned!

It took me about two hours but I finally got home only to find out that my cousin Michele's fiancée, Arnold Lim, was missing. Arnold and Michele had gotten engaged a month before, and the eerie thing is that one of the last pictures I remember of them, was at their engagement party in Edgewater, NJ and the Towers stood behind them. Anyway, Arn used to work at Lehman Brothers in Jersey City a few floors below me at Z100. We used to meet for lunch all the time. It was right around the time of their engagement that Arn took a job at the Trade Center with a company called Fiduciary Trust. When I found out that no one was able to get in touch, I began calling him every hour only to get his voicemail. The last person to speak to him was my Aunt Barbara, who called him to tell him the towers were on fire. He told her that he knew and he was actually watching it, but the building told everyone on the PA to stay where they were and that they were safe. My aunt told him that she didn't care and to get the hell out of the building. He told her he was leaving and that was the last we heard from him. My guess is that he was making his way down the stairwell when that second plane hit, which is the one I saw. They never found his body.

The weeks to follow would be about rebuilding and Memorials. I've heard so many different stories from people who were actually down at the Trade Center and survived. I've also heard stories about people seeing bodies fall around them and stories from people who overslept and never made it to work at the Trade Center that day. Then there's the story of my wife, who never made it to the PATH station because her new kitten needed her attention. Everyone in that PATH died underground. With all of these stories and families of the victims, how can we ever forget what those scumbags did to us as a nation? Sure, there are so many other stories! This one was just mine....

A BRAWL AT THE MALL.....WITH THE EASTER BUNNY?

With Easter coming this Sunday, I felt this story was more than appropriate for today's blog, and go figure, it happened at the Newport Center Mall in Jersey City, NJ, my old stomping grounds. I used to work upstairs from this mall when I worked at dance station WKTU.

Anyway, the spirit of Easter came to a screaming halt Sunday evening after a mall bunny found himself tangled up in a brawl at the mall. In a video posted on Twitter from Newport Center Mall, an Easter bunny was seen exchanging punches with a customer waiting online to have photos taken. At the beginning of the video, the bunny, without his floppy eared mask on, is seen being separated from a man wearing a brown shirt, but seconds after they are taken away from one another, the bunny throws his gloves off and approaches the man again.

No word on what caused the incident as police could not be reached for comment, but come on people! It's Easter! Can't we all get along? Besides, how low can you be to pick a fight with a fluffy white-tailed bunny taking photos with your kids? What would have made this video even more hilarious is if Santa Claus came out of nowhere to save the Easter Bunny from being pummeled. I was also wondering, how the hell do you fight in that costume? This feet would have made me trip all over the place. That would have a been a bad situation all-around! Only in Jersey!

Check out the video posted on Twitter this past Sunday:

HERO OF THE DOGS!

Originally, I was going to back to writing about teacher-student sex since there was a story out of Jersey City, NJ that really tickled my fancy, but as I read the story, it was the same old, same old! Married female teacher lures teenage female student to her house where they performed oral sex on each other. Haven't we heard that story before? Besides, I felt this story was much more appealing and worldly.

So, last week, I saw a petition floating around to stop some sort of dog meat festival in China. Being of Chinese descent, I kind of didn't want to believe this was true, but I am also a dog lover, so I signed this petition, but it seems this past weekend, the festival still went on. There was, however, a hero in the bunch! A retired school teacher and animal advocate saved the lives of 100 dogs on Saturday after she paid about $1,100 to save them from the annual dog meat festival in the southern Chinese city of Yulin. Let me start by saying, since I am of Chinese descent, I have never eaten dog meat to my knowledge. That is an incredibly disgusting tradition back in the motherland and growing up, I was a little embarrassed to know about it. I used to push it on the Vietnamese culture.

Anyway, 65-year-old Yang Xiaoyun traveled about 1,500 miles from her home in the city of Tianjin to secure the dogs. Yang has been rescuing animals since 1995, when she pulled an abandoned kitten from a river. In 1999, she founded a dog and cat sanctuary known as the "Common Home for All." She's taken in hundreds of animals and has even sold her home. She prepares meals for the animals and calls them her "children." Her shelter now houses almost 1,500 dogs and 200 cats. Well, I guess I found the Chinese equivalent to my wife.

Yang's selfless act in Yulin comes as international observers and activists continue to draw attention to the city's dog meat festival. According to Peter Li, a China policy specialist at the Humane Society International and associate professor at the University of Houston-Downtown, dog meat consumption does have a historical precedent in China, but the Yulin festival only dates back to 2009. About 10,000 dogs are killed each year for the Yulin festival, which coincides with the summer solstice. Some of the dogs that arrive in the city even have collars indicating  that they might be stolen pets. This is absolutely horrendous!

Actor and animal advocate Ricky Gervais condemned the festival and said footage he saw from past years broke his heart. He said in a statement, "I will never forget the look of bewilderment and fear on the faces of these poor animals. The dogs and cats await a horrible fate. No animal deserves to be treated like this." He's absolutely right!

Yang reportedly wants to open another dog sanctuary in Yulin. I would try to keep as many dogs out of Yulin as possible, those cannibals! Dogs are almost human-like when it comes to feelings. For people to even eat dog, you might as well eat a human too. It's times like this I am embarrassed by my Chinese heritage, but I can proudly say my family has never taken part in any of these traditions. I have aunts and uncles who had dogs and cats as pets. They definitely did not keep them around for food. Good for Miss Yang for standing her ground and saving at least 100 of these puppies!

9/11 THE WAY I REMEMBER IT....AND WILL NEVER FORGET.

I posted this entry on my blog last year to commemorate 9/11 and it received a very positive response. So, I've made the decision to post this blog entry every year on 9/11, so new readers and new friends can read what I went through on this horrific day. Here is "9/11 The Way I remember it":

In my 2 years of writing this blog, I try to be entertaining and for the most part, funny. Today is not one of those days. In the past two years, I realized that I never shared my 9/11 experience with you in this blog because quite frankly, who wants to re-live that day of horror for New York City and this great nation? Today, I want to share with you, how my day went 12 years ago, which by the way, I cannot believe it's been 12 years already!

Anyway, I remember driving into Z100 in Jersey City, NJ the morning of 9/11/01. The sun was just rising and was looking like it was going to be a gorgeous day out. I remember it like it was yesterday. The air was crisp. Not too hot and not too cold. It was perfect. For some reason, I remembered driving in down the New Jersey Turnpike from my Bergen County home and just looking at that beautiful skyline. Little did I know, it would be the last time that I would be enjoying that skyline with the twin towers there and standing tall.

Our morning was your typical morning of comedic banter amongst the morning show, which consisted of host Elvis Duran, Christine Nagy, John Bell, Danielle Monaro, Skeery Jones, David Brody, Greg T., Scotty B., a guy named Stick, myself, and our morning show consultant Dennis Clark.

I quickly ran into the studio and told Elvis, who was in a commercial break, about the call and what I saw. People from different departments showed up to watch at the window, when Stick noticed something flying really low over Staten Island, which was to our right. I was baffled and confused and it all came clear when I heard Danielle Monaro crying, "Oh my God!

Arnold and Michele had gotten engaged a month before and the eerie thing is that one of the last pictures I remember of them was at their engagement party in Edgewater, NJ and the Towers stood behind them. My aunt told him that she didn't care and to get the hell out.

I've also heard stories about people seeing bodies fall around them. I've also heard stories from people who overslept and never made it to work in the Trade Center that day. Then there's the story of my fiancée who never made it to the PATH station where everyone died underground because her new kitten needed her attention. With all of these stories and families of the victims, how can we ever forget what those scumbags did to us as a nation? Sure, there are so many other stories! This one was just mine....

And now here stands what looks like the big middle finger to the terrorists....The Freedom Tower!

JERSEY CITY KNOCKOUT

Seriously, what makes people do what they do? Yesterday, on Facebook, there was video of a group of kids from Jersey City, NJ going around knocking people out for fun in a game they call "Knockout!" Apparently, the idea of the game is to walk up to an unsuspecting, defenseless person on the street and try and punch them out with one blow. That is ridiculous! If one of these kids tried that on me, they better hope they knock me out because if I get up, I will be the one going to jail!

Anyway, three of the teens who play this game have been locked up on murder charges after they allegedly punched a man to death during a game of "Knockout." The three teens, all from Jersey City, followed a homeless Hoboken man, Ralph Santiago, down a street back in September. One of the boys punched Santiago, causing him to fall back from the knockout blow and collapse onto an iron fence, where he died after his neck was wedged between two posts. After police released video of the teens near the scene of the crime, the teens eventually turned themselves in and are being held at the Hudson County Youth Detention Center. Ironically, Santiago was disabled from a similar attack 20 years ago in the Bronx.

While there is no data showing exactly how many people have died as a result to this stupid game, many similar cases have made national headlines in the past like in 2011, when a St. Louis man was killed after being attacked in a game of "Knockout." His attacker was convicted of second-degree murder charges. Then in London, a 16-year-old girl was viciously punched from behind in 2012. The attack was caught on camera and when the judge asked the attacker why he did it, he responded with "she didn't have a friendly face." That guy sounds like an asshole and belongs in jail.

I have to admit that I'm a little concerned because I have many friends in Jersey City and if this is an ongoing game out there, I want them to be aware and vigilant. They need to know that if they see a group of teens just hanging around and not doing anything, they should be on their guard. This is such a stupid game! As if we all didn't have our own things to worry about, no we have to worry about these thugs?
