Did
we learn nothing from the school shootings in Newtown, Connecticut? If we did,
then why did a 7-year-old just get caught in a Queens, New York school with a
loaded, yes, I said 'loaded', handgun and a flare gun in his backpack? I just
don't get it!
Police
arrested the mother of 7-year-old Queens boy on Thursday, who showed up to
school with a handgun, a flare gun and ammo in his bookbag, prompting a
building-wide lockdown of the school. A safety agent at the school discovered
the .22-caliber handgun and a flare pistol after the boy's mother, Deborah
Farley, 53, notified the principal of Wave Preparatory Elementary School in Far
Rockaway, NY two hours after dropping him off Thursday morning. The bag also
contained an extra 10-round ammunition magazine and loose bullets. Early this
morning, police announced that the mother was arrested and being charged in
connection with the incident and will face counts of criminal possession of a
deadly weapon, unlawful possession of a deadly weapon, and endangering the
welfare of a child. She hasn't been arraigned at the time of this
writing.
Investigators
searched Farley's home and found additional ammunition. She did admit that the
.22-caliber was hers and that she stashed the gun in her son's bookbag on
Wednesday and then totally forgot about it. The mother's story seemed somewhat
different the next day when it hit the public. According to police sources, the
mother dropped her second-grader off at school, only to return home to be told
by a family member that the boy had taken a gun, ammo, and flare gun to school.
The mom, supposedly, rushed back to campus and pulled her son out of class,
saying that he had a dental appointment. He son allegedly told her that he'd
given the gun to a classmate, which turned out to be untrue. The mother then
confessed to the principal, who ordered the lockdown that sent terrified
students into a frenzy looking for safety in fear that a gunman was stalking
the halls.
The
guns were eventually tracked down and all were safe. BUT, and this is a big
'but', why did this kid have a gun in his backpack in the first place? If I had
to stash a gun somewhere safe, the very last place that I would place it would
be in the backpack of my 7-year-old child. What is wrong with people? Are you
not paying attention to the news? Do you not see that we are trying to control
guns in this country? Put your guns someplace safe! It's people like Miss
Farley, who don't deserve to be a gun owner because she doesn't use her brain
and is careless. Who needs a brainless and careless gun owner running around
these parts of the country? Oh, yeah! They already are!
