I
still can't seem to shake the idea of kids bringing guns to school and shooting
fellow students. I mean, even today, kids are getting suspended for even
pretending they have a gun in their hand, and rightly so. The other day, I read
a story about a kid who prevented yet another school shooting from happening,
but instead of being heralded a hero, he was suspended. Does that even make any
sense?
It
turns out; a 16-year-old Florida high school student, from Cypress Lake High
School in Fort Myers, wrestled a loaded gun away from a football player
threatening to shoot a teammate was punished for his part in disarming the
football player on the school bus ride home. The student was suspended from
school for three days. Now, why would you suspend a student, or a hero rather,
who just probably saved the lives of many students on a school bus? Witnesses
on the bus said the suspect was aiming a .22 caliber revolver "point
blank" at a student and saying he was going to shoot. So, instead of
rewarding the heroic teen who put his own life at risk, school authorities
suspended him, they say, "For his role in an incident where a weapon was
present." WHAT? His role during the incident was "hero"! One kid
was going to shoot another kid until this heroic student jumped in. He saved a
life! They should be throwing a party for this kid!
The
boy, who has not been publicly identified, said that there was 'no doubt' that
he saved the target's life with his actions and that the suspension was dumb
because he can't believe he's being suspended for doing the right thing. The
boy's mother added that if her son hadn't acted vigilantly, there would've been
a lot of fatalities including her son. The suspect has been charged with
possession of a firearm on school property and assault with a deadly weapon
without the intent to kill. A school district spokesperson refused to comment
on the incident, obviously, but he did say, "Florida law allows the
principal to suspend a student immediately pending a hearing." Um, okay!
How is this particular student supposed to get those three days of education
back? This is so unfair and this principal is a moron! Back in the day, if you
saved lives like this, you were a hero and the whole town would be praising
you. Today, if you save lives, you get suspended from school? What the hell is
happening to our society? I can see if the kid wrestled the gun away and then
picked it up and pointed it at other students, maybe you suspend him, but if
that didn't happen, then there is no reason to suspend the hero in this story.
What do you guys think?
