When
did it become so dangerous to walk in the streets of New York City? Okay, maybe
that came out the wrong way since these days you can get punched in the face by
a group of thugs as your walking by. I meant, when did it get so dangerous just
crossing the street in New York City? According to statistics, 2014 is on pace
to be one of the deadliest for pedestrians in the last four years. We're only
13 days into January and already seven people have been struck and killed by a
vehicle. Why do drivers have no regard for other lives or even driving
laws?

New
NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio campaigned on a plan to reduce fatalities or serious
injuries in the next 10 years to zero. Let's see if he's talking shit. He
claims that the approach will include expanding 20-mph "slow zones,"
increasing enforcement of reckless driving and redesigning 50 dangerous
intersections and corridors a year. Will this create even more traffic in our
city streets, though? Will it matter as long as pedestrians are safe?

New
City Controller Scott Stringer said, "Our streets shouldn't be this
dangerous. It's just heartbreaking what happened to that 9-year-old boy, and
it's unacceptable." It sure is, but what are you going to do about it? As
pedestrians, we need to be more aware of our surroundings too to avoid these
crazy New York City drivers from hitting us. I mean texting and walking is a
distraction that can cause you to be hit. Just like when you're driving, that
text can wait until your stopped and sitting somewhere. I've seen so many people
come close to getting hit by a car crossing the street while they were texting
and walking. Whatever happened to the old rule of looking both ways before you
crossed the street? That needs to be put back into effect. Especially, in New
York City!
