When
did it become so dangerous to walk in the streets of New York City? Okay, maybe
that came out the wrong way since these days you can get punched in the face by
a group of thugs as your walking by. I meant, when did it get so dangerous just
crossing the street in New York City? According to statistics, 2014 is on pace
to be one of the deadliest for pedestrians in the last four years. We're only
13 days into January and already seven people have been struck and killed by a
vehicle. Why do drivers have no regard for other lives or even driving
laws?
Just
this past Friday, 9-year-old Cooper Stock was walking across an Upper West Side
Street holding his father's hand when he was run over by a yellow taxi. Then on
Saturday, a 32-year-old mother of twin boys, Nydja Herring, was mowed down and killed by a
drunken driver in the Bronx. If pedestrian deaths continue at this rate, the
city will quickly bypass the 156 pedestrian fatalities in 2013, with more than
200 pedestrian fatalities by year's end. That is sick! I really feel bad for
those who lost loved ones due to drunk drivers. Those can be avoided by the
drunk drivers simply not getting behind the wheel. As for the yellow taxi run
downs, how about New York hiring drivers that can actually drive? Even when I
drive into the city, I hate being near a NYC cab because their driver's are
unpredictable and they just don't care if they hit you. Then again, hitting
another car is one thing, but now they're hitting human beings? Maybe it's
another Jihad or something?
New
NYC Mayor Bill De Blasio campaigned on a plan to reduce fatalities or serious
injuries in the next 10 years to zero. Let's see if he's talking shit. He
claims that the approach will include expanding 20-mph "slow zones,"
increasing enforcement of reckless driving and redesigning 50 dangerous
intersections and corridors a year. Will this create even more traffic in our
city streets, though? Will it matter as long as pedestrians are safe?
One
suggestion was that Police Commissioner Bill Bratton ramp up efforts to
investigate collisions and criminally charge drivers who cause injury and take
a life because they were driving dangerously. You mean they don't investigate
it thoroughly and these drivers get away with murder? If lives have been taken,
you bet your ass a full-blown investigation should take place. A murder is a
murder, whether it's done by a car, a gun, a knife or someone's bare
hands.
New
City Controller Scott Stringer said, "Our streets shouldn't be this
dangerous. It's just heartbreaking what happened to that 9-year-old boy, and
it's unacceptable." It sure is, but what are you going to do about it? As
pedestrians, we need to be more aware of our surroundings too to avoid these
crazy New York City drivers from hitting us. I mean texting and walking is a
distraction that can cause you to be hit. Just like when you're driving, that
text can wait until your stopped and sitting somewhere. I've seen so many people
come close to getting hit by a car crossing the street while they were texting
and walking. Whatever happened to the old rule of looking both ways before you
crossed the street? That needs to be put back into effect. Especially, in New
York City!
