Have
you ever walked through a parking garage only to get a strong whiff of pee? Or
how about a subway station? Well, if you smell it, chances are someone has peed
in those areas. The smell doesn't just appear out of nowhere!
Well,
Atlanta's MARTA rail stations are looking to put an end to the public
urinations due to the overabundance of complaints about the problem. They are
convincing the Rapid Transit Authority to deploy a urine-detection system in
the rail station's elevators, where the odor is the strongest. The program,
supposedly the first of its kind, is currently being tested in a single
elevator in a Midtown Atlanta train station. It apparently uses sensors to
detect when someone decided to piss somewhere between floors 2 and 3.
According
to MARTA's director of elevators and escalators, if somebody urinates in the
elevator, there will be some sort of splash factor. The splash would set off of
sensor. The urine detection device, or the UDD, somehow detects that the pee as
it is occurring and sets off an alarm intended to bring the MARTA police and
deal with the weak-bladdered prospect.
In
the month since the one test UDD was put into place (along with a sign warning
people about the UDD's existence), MARTA says there has only been one incident
and that elevator violator was arrested. Before the UDD, MARTA says this particular
elevator was being urinated in on a daily basis.
Based
on that success, MARTA will begin rolling out UDDs to the other elevators in
the coming months at a cost of $10,000 a pop. I have to say that wouldn't
putting cameras into those elevators be a little less cost effective? The one
thing that I couldn't help to think about throughout this article is that the
people going to the bathroom in these elevators might be homeless and they have
no place else to go to the bathroom. I'm not saying that they should get a
pass, but I can't picture a person with any sort of decency just pissing in an
elevator. Then again, you have the instant asshole, just add alcohol! If they
bring this to New York City, you'll see a lot of people going to jail for
peeing at the train station. Just telling this story gave me the aroma of urine
in my nostrils.
