You
have to love scammers who don't think they'll ever get caught! This case is no
different! Krystle Marie Reyes is an Oregon woman who allegedly received a $2.1
million tax refund after she filed a false claim has finally been caught this
weekend after a $200,000 spending spree! What an idiot! Miss Reyes, who is
actually from Salem, was arrested in what is believed to be the largest case of
fraud in the state of Oregon.
The
25-year-old used TurboTax to falsely report wages of $3 million on her 2011
income tax return, and used the software's tax calculator to claim a refund of
$2.1 million. TurboTax then issued her a Visa card with the refund amount after
Oregon approved the sum. According to the affidavit, Oregon's revenue officials
only discovered the fraud when Reyes reported the card with the seven-figure
sum lost. This story keeps getting better and better. I can't stop laughing
about how dumb this girl is!
Reyes
had already spent $200,000 on a car and a few other items when authorities
caught wind of the whole situation. Some surveillance video caught Reyes using
the card to make purchases at several different businesses in Salem. She even
signed her name and provided her address on some of the transactions. Are you
laughing yet? I cannot believe that someone can be this dumb!
My
question here is who is dumber, though? Miss Reyes or the government? How did
the IRS let this slip through the cracks? According to the state of Oregon, the
refund was approved due to "human error". Apparently, the processing
system did flag the return for manual review, and they did manually review the
return, but one of the government agencies internal controls failed, and the
$2.1 million refund did get approved. Intuit, the company who owns TurboTax,
has since returned $1.9 million back to the state, while Co-Chair of Oregon's
House Revenue Committee Representative, Vicki Berger was enraged by the
oversight. I ask again.....Who's to blame? Miss Reyes or the government?
Reyes
appears in court on July 5, where she will face charges of aggravated theft and
computer crime. This is just unreal!
