You
want to take your family to Disney World, but you don't want to wait in those
long lines to get on the rides. Well, according to the New York Post, some
wealthy Manhattan moms have figured out a way to cut those long lines. How?
Their tactic will absolutely disgust you, but if you had the money, would you do
it to make your family happy? You see, what they do is they hire a disabled
person to pose as a family member so they and their kids can jump to the front
of the line. Is that sick or what? These "black-market Disney guides"
can run anywhere from $130 an hour to $1,040 for an eight hour day. That is
unreal!
One
mother, who hired the Dream Tours Florida service, gloated, "My daughter
waited one minute to get on 'It's a Small World", while the other kids had
to wait for 2 1/2 hours." It
sounds to me that this mother could use a slap upside her head. She went on to
brag, "This is how the 1 percent does Disney. You can't go to Disney
without a tour concierge!" Um, you sure can! I've done Disney many times
as a kid with my family and part of the charm of Disney was waiting in those
lines and spending time with my family. By rushing through these lines and
burning through the park in a few hours, what good does that do for your kids?
In fact, what kind of memories of Disney will your kids have of the park if they
speed through everything because you hired a handicapped person to be your guide?
Don't these parks have a fast pass lane anyway?
This
woman said that she hired a Dream Tours guide to escort her, her husband, their
5-year-old daughter and 1-year-old son through the popular theme park on a
motorized scooter with a "handicapped" sign on it. Their group was
sent straight to an auxiliary entrance at the front of each attraction. The
rule at Disney is that each guest who needs a wheelchair or motorized scooter
can bring up to six guests to a more convenient entrance. Now, Disney does warn
about the waiting period before each ride, but the consensus among these
upper-crusty moms, who have used the handicapped tactic, is that the trick is
well worth the cost. They say that not only are these "black-market tour
guides" more efficient than the Disney VIP Tours, it's also way cheaper.
Disney Tours offer a VIP guide and fast passes for $310 to $380 an hour.
Passing
around this disabled guide service's phone number recently became a shameless
ritual among Manhattan's private-school parents during spring break. The
service asks who referred them before they even take the call. It's almost a
like a speakeasy asking for the secret word. Author, Dr. Wednesday Martin
discovered this underground network while she was doing research for her
upcoming book, "Primates of Park Avenue." Dr. Martin joked, "Who
wants a fast pass when you can use your black-market handicapped guide to
circumvent the lines all together?" The owner of Dream Tours Florida could
not be found for comment on this situation.
I
have to tell you, though I find this tactic absolutely disgusting, I have to
ask myself, "Would I do it to make my child happy? Or would my child be
happy just sitting in a line for an hour or two to get on a ride?" Also,
if the person who would be acting as your guide really is handicapped, this is
actually a decent paying job for them. So, who am I to take a job from someone
trying to earn a living? Is it an honest living? Well, the jury still out on
that one, but seriously, if any of you had the money, would you do this for
your kids?
