This
is still 2013, right? I didn't wake up in a time machine or did I? Apparently,
students at a Georgia high school are still fighting racial segregation. It
turns out; a group of black and white teens at Wilcox County High School in
Rochelle, GA have banded together to organize the school's first -ever
integrated prom almost 60 years after the landmark case of "Brown vs. the
Board of Education", which declared separate was inherently unequal. Even
though, they share the same classroom, historically, there have been two
separate proms and homecomings every year. One was for the white students and
one was for the black students. Well, since it is 2013, and you are going to
segregate, what about one for the yellow students and one for the brown
students while you’re at it. What the hell? Are they this ass backwards down in
Georgia? How are they getting away with this?
A
group of high school seniors who go to Wilcox have come out and said that they
find this whole thing embarrassing and they are embarrassed. Teens, Stephanie
Sinnot and Keela Bloodworth, who are white, and Maresha Rucker and Quanesha
Wallace, who are black, said that they've been friends since the fourth grade
and want to go to prom together because it's the quintessential end-of-senior
year bash! After much deliberating, this year, there will still be two proms.
One will be white and one will be integrated. So, what was solved here? The
black kids are still being left out of one of the proms. Why can't there be
just one prom for all of the students. This is plain stupid and ignorant.
Wilcox
County High School actually does not even sponsor either event. The dances rely
solely on private donations (like from the KKK, I'm sure), fundraising efforts
and organization from parents and the students. Because the event is privately
funded and not being held in the high school, organizers can choose who enters
the dance. One Councilman said that he didn't think there was an effort made to
keep black kids out of the white prom or to keep white kids out of the black
prom. He went on to say that when he was a student at the high school; there
were three dances, a black prom and two white proms because students couldn't
agree on a live band or a deejay. One of the students, Bloodworth, said that if
a black person attempted to walk into the white prom, organizers would probably
have the police come out there and escort them off the premises. She also said
that just last year, a biracial couple was turned away from the white prom.
I
am absolutely speechless that this is still going on. It's 2013 for crying out
loud! Public segregation ended in 1964! That is almost 50 years ago! Get with
the program, Georgia! To be honest, I am surprised a riot didn't erupt over
this! Where is Al Sharpton when you need him? This is totally his deal. Only,
he can rectify this situation!
