What would you
do if you found $10,000 in a hotel room? Probably pocket it, right? Well,
here's a story to piss you off to kick off the work week! 10-year-old Tyler
Schaefer was snooping around his parent's Kansas City, Missouri hotel room when
he found a wad of cash worth $10,000 in a drawer. Tyler told his dad, Cody,
about his discovery and his dad, the dutiful citizen that he is, decided to
hand the cash over to the police. WHAT? Yes, the father handed the money over
to the police and I'm sure he was expecting some type of reward. Guess what,
dummy? That was the reward!
Tyler Schaefer
is by nature the kind of kid who likes to explore and find things. He's said to
be a big fan of the "Pirates of the Caribbean" movies. Dad, Cody says
that Tyler is constantly checking for extra change in machines slots or extra
cash on the ground. Well, it looks like he found the mother load this time!
Cody says that he just looks for random stuff and is very observant.
When the
Schaefers checked into the Hilton Airport Hotel in Kansas City last Saturday,
Tyler naturally started looking for treasures. "Somebody might have left
something cool," explained little Tyler before sticking his head in the
closets and rummaging through the drawers. Cody was shocked when he turned
around finding his little boy with the big prize in his hand. At first, he
wondered if the neatly stacked pile of cash was real. Not knowing what to do,
Cody chose to turn the money over to the authorities, who were just as
surprised by the find. What a dummy!
According to
the Kansas City Police Department, no one has come forward for the cash yet and
they are surprised that if someone lost $10k, they would have come forward by
now. According to Missouri law, the Schaefers have to wait 19 months before
they can claim the cash. First, they have to file an affidavit stating when and
where they found the money and a judge will confirm that the cash is really
worth $10,000. If the owner doesn't come forward in 40 days, the Schaefers are
required to advertise the find in a newspaper for three weeks. After six
months, the family can claim the cash. If the owner pops up one year after the
Schaefers pocket the cash, he or she can demand a reimbursement. It's a long
shot, but Cody claims he's not too worried and said, "We didn't have the
money when we got there, so it doesn't change much." Yup! Sounds like a
moron!
All that stuff
that the Schaefers have to wait for to happen just proves my point. You should
not have turned it in! The police are probably laughing at you right now! And
you should've pocketed the money. Now, anyone can virtually claim it unless
they got back and check the hotels records to see who stayed there last. You
know what? I think I was at a Hilton in Kansas City two weeks ago. My account
seems a little low. In fact, it seems $10,000 too low!
What a bunch of
idiots! Sorry, kid!
